What causes motion sickness?
Motion sickness occurs when your senses send you conflicting messages. Whether you’re in a car, on a boat, or in a plane during turbulence, your body can tell that you’re moving, but your eyes tell a different story.
The opposite can also occur your body tells you that you are not moving (e.g. sitting) but your eyes tell you that you are moving.
The inner ears, which are responsible for your balance, send messages to the brain telling it that the body is physically moving, meanwhile the eyes send messages that the body is stationary. This conflicting information may cause unpleasant motion sickness symptoms.
How can I prevent motion sickness?
There are many preventative measures you can take to avoid motion sickness, including:
- During motion, look at the horizon or a distant, stationary object
- Sit in the front seat of the car during car rides and keep your eyes on the road as if you were driving
- Sit in the centre of a ship or in a seat aligned with the front edge of the wing on a plane, where there is the least amount of motion
- Take a turn driving – you are less likely to get motion sickness when you are driving
- Try closing your eyes to eliminate sensory confusion
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before travelling and during the trip
- Make sure you have plenty of fresh air
- Always face the direction of travel
- If travelling on a bus or train, sit in a forward facing seat
- Avoid reading or looking at a screen
- Take a motion sickness medication before you start your journey, like a TravaCalm product
When should I take TravaCalm Original or another TravaCalm product for motion sickness?
Take the first dose 30 minutes before departure to prevent motion sickness.
If you suffer from motion sickness, or think that you might experience motion sickness, it’s best to take TravaCalm Original or another TravaCalm product prior to travel, as it is generally more effective to prevent motion sickness before it starts. If you wait until you start feeling sick, motion sickness medications are generally less effective and if you have already started vomiting it will be much harder to keep your medication down let alone give it time to be absorbed.
Which TravaCalm products contain gluten?
- TravaCalm Original and TravaCalm H.O. Chewable both contain wheat/starch.
- TravaCalm Ginger is also a gluten-free option
- TravaCalm Travel Band is a drug-free device that is worn on the wrist (so it doesn’t contain gluten).
Which TravaCalm product would be suitable for me if I have difficulty swallowing tablets?
We know that some people, especially children, have trouble swallowing tablets, which is why three products in the TravaCalm range are suitable for people who have difficulty swallowing tablets.
- TravaCalm H.O. Chewable can be swallowed or chewed, and can be given to adults and children aged 8 years and older.
- TravaCalm Original can be crushed and mixed with water, jam or honey before giving to young children or people who have difficulty swallowing tablets. It can be given to adults and children aged 4 years and older.
- TravaCalm Travel Band is a drug-free device that is worn on the wrist. It can be used by adults and children over the age of 3 years.
Can any TravaCalm products cause drowsiness?
TravaCalm Original and H.O. Chewable may cause drowsiness. If you feel drowsy, do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery.
There are other options. TravaCalm Ginger is a non-drowsy formula and the TravaCalm Travel Band is a drug-free device that does not cause drowsiness.
TravaEase Passionflower can cause drowsiness. If affected do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery.
Which TravaCalm products can be used by children?
All TravaCalm motion or travel sickness products can be used by children, but the age suitability between products varies:
- TravaCalm Original can be given to children 4 years of age and older.
- TravaCalm H.O. Chewable can be given to children 8 years of age and older.
- TravaCalm Ginger can be given to children 6 years of age and older.
- TravaCalm Travel Band can be used by children over the age of 3 years.
- TavaEase Passionflower can be used in children from 12 years of age.
How does the TravaCalm Band work?
The TravaCalm Travel Band relieves nausea due to motion sickness by exerting pressure on the Nei-Kuan point on each wrist, using the science of acupressure to block nausea messages travelling to the brain.
One band must be worn on each wrist to be effective, and greater relief may be found by applying finger pressure to each button. Typically , but usually lasts as long as you wear the bands. For the best results, put the bands on before starting travel. The TravaCalm Travel Band should only be used on the Nei-Kuan point.th
When should I use the TravaCalm Travel Band for motion sickness?
The TravaCalm Travel Band should be used if you intend to relieve nausea. Nausea may be experienced due to motion (travel sickness) and pregnancy (morning sickness). Both included bands must be worn on each wrist to be effective. Typically, relief starts working in about 5 minutes. For best results, put the bands on before starting travel.
Does TravaCalm Travel Band contain latex?
No, the TravaCalm Travel Band is latex-free and made from cotton, polyester with silicone rubber elastic.
Can the TravaCalm Traval Band be reused or washed?
Yes, the TravaCalm Travel Band is reusable and washable.
The TravaCalm Travel Band may be washed with mild detergent in warm water and then air dried.
